Narrated from Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqaas(raa) that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever eats seven ‘Ajwa dates in the morning, will not be harmed by any poison or witchcraft that day.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

The dates are the best food for breaking the fast.
When Maryam, mother of Isa (as), was suffering from labor pains, dates were sent to her from Allah as a medicine; dates were what she was directed to in order to alleviate her from her suffering. This event is explained in Surah Maryam of the Holy Qur'an.
